Veterans passport scheme
British nationals (i.e. all British Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizens, British Nationals (Overseas), British Protected Persons, British Subjects and British Overseas citizens) born on or before 2 September 1929 are eligible for a free passport. Gratis passports are issued in the UK by the IPS in Liverpool.
Submit your application via your local Embassy, Consulate or High Commission.
Documents
• Completed application form IPS SE/04 (obtainable from your local Embassy, Consulate or High Commission);
• 2 x photographs - which must meet the IPS standard; and
• Your present (or expired) passport. If your passport has expired more than 10 years previously, you must provide confirmation of your entitlement to British nationality.
Make sure you use the right form. You must also make sure that you complete it correctly. Our staff will not be able to process your application and there may be a delay in issuing the passport if you use the wrong form or do not complete it properly.
Processing time
Please be advised that it may take 6-8 weeks for your passport to be issued (excluding travelling time).
If you do not have this time available, you can still apply to renew your British passport at the UK Passport Service for the Americas and Caribbean, Washington DC in the normal manner and pay the relevant fee . Should you choose this option, please remember to include a covering letter with your application, informing them of your decision to refuse Gratis passport facilities at this time.
